I don’t tend to broadcast my culture too much, but this is something very serious and very important to me.
In 1877 after the United States granted the Sioux land and protection from Gold Rush encroachers, all of the land “given” to the Sioux was taken away, reservations were built, and the government built a road on Sioux land for the settlers.
In 1980 the U.S. government “awarded” $100 million to the Sioux, but was never accepted because the Sioux said the land was never for sale and would never be sold.
On August 25, 2012 over 1500 acres of the Black Hills (Paha Sapa) was divided intro five tracts and put up for auction. The auction has since been postponed, but the land is still up for sale privately.
Pe’ Sla is not just hills though. It is not just land to be divided and sold and built upon. Pe’ Sla is synonymous to Mecca, the Bodhi tree, and Mount Sinai to name a few sacred places.Pe’ Sla is the Heart of All That Is, the Center. It is a part of their creation story and is immensely sacred.
This land, their land, our land should have never been taken from them, and although we cannot fix history we can change our future. Instead of taking more land from us give it back. I am not asking you to do the impossible and remove our reservations and return every inch of land we lived on, I’m asking you donate whatever you can to help save Pe’ Sla.
We are still here, and so is our land. Do not take that away from us anymore than it already has.
