![Russell Means | November 10, 1939 - October 22, 2012
Russell Means was more than just a Hollywood American Indian actor. Well known for providing the voice of Chief Powhatan in Disney’s Pocahontas, and Chingachgook in Last of the Mohicans, Russell Means was an activist and important figure in American Indian right’s issues.
In 1973 Russell Means helped lead the Wounded Knee uprising where several Oglala Lakota and AIM protesters seized and occupied Wounded Knee, South Dakota for 71 days.
“Wounded Knee happened because Indian people wanted to survive as Indians and there wasn’t any way to survive, so we made a stand and made a statement, but now Indian people are beginning to rebound, rebound according to their [concept of] “Beauty.” And that’s really what’s necessary to understand: Indian people have to become free again.”
